What Recruiters Want, What They Really Really Want

What Recruiters Want, What They Really Really Want Understanding how to best use  a recruitment consultant as part of your job search will not only cut your paranoia and stress levels down  a lot, but will also accelerate your journey to that dream role. So, let’s talk about recruiters. They’re often criticised and regularly despised by both job hunters and employers alike. For every candidate who tells you what great help they received from a recruiter, four others will foam at the mouth, punch a wall and burn furniture at the mere mention of the R word. For every hiring manager who swears by agency recruiters, several others would slaughter their first-born if it meant they’d never have to use another one. So what’s wrong with recruiters? Well, I suggest they’re misunderstood and the problem is yours, not theirs. Okay, I’m used to the hard stares and long silences at this point in the conversation. I’m also wearing a gum shield and a cricket box so I’m hoping you’ll bear with. Recruitment. How hard can it be, really? Agency recruiters are misunderstood for several reasons, but mainly because a lot can go wrong for them. Recruiters are often in competition with other firms, so if you fail to win a job, they get literally nothing after putting in a lot of hard work. Failing to understand that both you and the recruiter have skin in the game is often the point where it all starts to go wrong. Employers can be mercurial. Hiring freezes, changes to the role or person specification and employers endlessly searching for that perfect person abound.  Candidates themselves can be a minefield. Without warning, they can drop out of the running, refuse an offered role or fail to turn up for one, even after they’ve signed a contract.  Factor in misleading CVs, exaggerated qualifications, dodgy references and a lack of work permits and you can wonder how recruiters ever manage to place anyone. A recruiter is investing time and money and is therefore taking on a risk. For you, as a job hunter, the world is all about being seen as a low-risk, fast-win, high-gain choice. Are you a good bet? Let’s look at how you can build a positive relationship with your recruitment consultant and thereby encourage them to invest in you, rather than someone else on their books. Do your preparation first Figure out what makes you a good bet. Focus your CV, tidy up your online presence and get ready with a life-story that shows you are THE number one perfect choice for that next role. Take responsibility for your search Dont abdicate responsibility and wait for others to deliver opportunities. It’s YOUR job search and a firm of recruiters should only be part of your strategy. Take charge of the relationship Don’t just register online and upload a CV to their site. Pick up the phone, find out who’ll be handling your interests and start building a relationship with them. Base that relationship on trust and nurture it. Define your objective Be specific about the job you’re looking for, the sectors you work in, locations you’ll consider, your capabilities and your needs and wants. If things change, let your recruiter know. Talk to multiple recruiters Different clients work with different recruiters so you’re not being a harlot or trying to set them against each other. After all, they have more than one candidate on their books. Know where your CV is going Be very explicit from the outset â€" you don’t want your CV blasted everywhere as it makes you look desperate, tired and unprofessional. Insist on knowing what they’re putting you forward for, and with which companies. Agree a pattern of contact Ask how they work and what’s reasonable for regular contact. Weekly works well to keep everyone on the ball without feeling hustled and also helps limit the time it takes to get feedback. Use an agenda When you call, in addition to any specific opportunities, some items to have on a regular list are: what’s happened since last week? What’s the plan this week? How’s the market looking? Any general thoughts or feedback? Be positive A recruiter is not your counsellor, nor are they there to keep you motivated. If you’re feeling down, don’t talk about it. Be strong, be positive and be optimistic. If they think you’re weak, you’re a bad bet and they’ll sideline you. Be a friend Since you’re not paying them, why not introduce a friend or colleague? Even better, why not introduce a company that may be able to put some work their way? If they feel obligated, you’ll get preferential treatment. To summarise … A recruiter is not your agent, so you need to respect the relationship and not run conversations as interrogations. By following the above you can maintain control and keep up the pressure, whilst still being able to develop a close and trusting relationship.  Knowing you won’t be hassling them every day leaves recruiters the mental space to do their job properly, whilst knowing you’ll be calling on Friday keeps them on their toes. 17 Things Every Woman Should Know About Balancing Work Travel

17 Things Every Woman Should Know About Balancing Work Travel I am excited this week to share that I have been selected as part of the Hilton Garden Inn (HGI) by Bright On team.  This means that over the next few weeks, youll be seeing more blog articles and social media posts from me about how to work smart, eat well, sleep well, stay fit and, most importantly, how you can treat yourself as a busy working woman. According to a survey done by Wakefield Research,  more than 1 in 4 (26%) of women have purposely scheduled a business trip just to have time to themselves away from home. In my previous corporate career, I traveled a lot and actually stayed at quite a few Hilton Garden Inn hotels in my prior corporate traveling days. I was constantly on the  cross country flight  route and actually started to get into a little routine. But lets be real clear about work travel. It often SOUNDS better than it really  is if you arent smart about it.  Theres a lot of late nights, happy hour invitations, long meetings and a never-ending to-do list of  emails waiting for you when you  get back to the hotel room. Not to mention the jet lag and exhaustion  that comes from changing time zones on an ongoing  weekly basis. Here was my work travel routine: My normal route was from San Diego to Charlotte, South Carolina every Monday morning. I would  check into my hotel at around 6pm. Then, I would hustle to find something to eat, prepare for my week, iron my clothes and be ready to go to sleep  by 9:30pm. Except, the big problem was that since it was only 6:30pm in San Diego still, my body was  just not  ready to actually sleep. This left hours upon hours of me trying to sleep especially because I was a little nervous about the full day of meetings the next day as well. Then, I would stay in Charleston for meetings with clients and visiting some of our actual production sites. Then, by Thursday or Friday, I would make my way back to the Charleston airport at 4:30am and fly back to San Diego. It was a very full week. With happy hours, extremely  long workdays and jet lag, how did I ever manage to keep  my focus and productivity  in a hotel room? Lets dive into my top tips on  how to stay sane, have fun and actually enjoy work travel. We’ll cover common problems and little improvements you can make to make work travel more rewarding and fun. We’ll also cover how to travel smart, eat smart and be healthy on the road. 17 Things Every Woman Should Know About Balancing Work Travel 1. Enjoy the perks. You work hard and  it is OK to enjoy  your time in the hotel, eat  great  food  and sleep with lots of pillows. You work hard so dont be afraid to order room service or have a night out at your favorite restaurant alone with a good book. Who cares what other people think! I always tried to find the time to splurge on a bath or a glass of wine to decompress! 2. Make time to workout.   This is a must. The times I didnt make time for my workout I would be miserable by the end of the week. Try to book a hotel with a great workout facility or go for a walk or run around the hotel. I usually chose to stick with the treadmill because of safety and because I often worked out late at night when it was dark. 3. Stay healthy. Use anti-bacterial hand soap and wash your hands a lot. Keep Emergen-C with you at all times and do your best to not get sick! Make sure you stay hydrated as well and avoid too much caffeine. 4. Wear comfortable shoes. You may have lots of walking to do, especially if you are running from work meetings straight to the airport.   Invest in some comfortable (and cute) flats to throw in your carry-on bag. 5. Listen to your body.   Don’t feel bad saying no to late night drinks with co-workers. Take care of yourself and go to bed early to fight jet lag and sluggish mornings.  If you’ve been going non-stop for a week and are feeling unwell, consider if you are really and truly interested in exploring, or whether you just feel you “have” to. A good rest can do wonders to reinvigorate yourself â€" and don’t forget you need to hit the ground running on Monday morning. Don’t overtire yourself out so much on the weekend that you’re a poor business traveler for the next week. 6. Nourish  yourself for peak performance. The better you feel the more energy you will have to be at peak performance. You won’t be lethargic or tired. You will have energy when you come back from the hotel or when you wake up. Everyone’s body is different so I am not telling you what to eat or drink, but I will just say that the times in my life that I have had the most energy are when I am the healthiest. Somehow when I was training for that marathon, I wasn’t tired, I was  actually the most productive I have ever been in my life. Same with traveling. When I am taking care of my body while I travel, that is when I also do my best work. 7. You are what you  eat. This changed my outlook of food when I heard this. What are the words that describe the type of person and life you want to live while you are working and traveling. My words are full of life, energetic, inspiring, motivating and fulfilling. Now when I am struggling to figure out what to eat while traveling, I ask myself what foods on the menu are full of life, energetic, inspiring, motivating and fulfilling. It’s amazing how much easier the choice is! 8. Stay hydrated while working. Keep water next to you always while you are working and on the go. You will never catch me without my water bottle.  Staying hydrated will give you more energy to get through those long work meetings too. 9.  Pamper yourself. If you feel great, you will be more confident and happier.  I know your reason for reading this blog  is to become happier in your career and life so focus on taking care of yourself and being the best you can be to your body. That really is how you treat yourself with food and exercise. And why not see if your hotel has additional pampering services like spa treatments or manicures as well! If you ever deserve a reward for a job well done, then this is it! 10. Change your mindset if you are stressed. Something I truly believe is that you have to treat your current job as your dream job to create the life you want. Do you know how many people would LOVE to have your job with all this fun travel? Isnt this a role you always dreamed of having when you are back in college? Step back and really see all of the successes you have had in your career to make it to this point. 11. Get rid of your travel  shoulds. We all have so many shoulds, don’t we. But what if I asked you instead, “What do you want?” This is one thing that I have really learned in my cross country road trip  living a location independent work lifestyle.  Every day I did what I wanted to do everyday instead of all of the housework, laundry, meetings and requests  and so much more I felt like I should do. Everyone thought we were crazy because it was so outside the norm to leave San Diego, put everything in storage and go on a road trip to Iowa. But it was one of the best decisions ever because we got rid of our shoulds by going on a travel adventure and getting to know a new destination. [RELATED: 5 Lessons Learned From Running a Business From the Road] 12. Have fun   The day we packed up and started driving, I literally dropped my to do list. I got rid of shoulds and started doing more of what made me happy that I really wanted to do like spending quality time with friends and family I haven’t seen in years and staying in random inns off the beaten path in North Dakota with my little family. So many adventures we had and it’s all because I started doing more of what I really wanted and having more fun with my work. I am a better CEO, mother, wife and encourager to all of you as well. My creativity is through the roof. I am relaxed. I am happy. My only should is to take care of myself and my family the best I can. How simple is that. How can you have more fun while you travel? 13. Batch as if your life depends on it. You have limited time while traveling so you absolutely must be as productive as possible! Batching  is when you group similar tasks into blocks of time.   During this time you have no distractions.  Did you know that every time you are distracted, it takes 15 minutes to regain complete focus again? Examples are only looking at emails or social media at certain times of the day.  Setting a timer, shutting off distractions and only working on your goals. Try to do this as much as possible while you are traveling. Set a timer and check off that to-do list and answer as many emails as possible! 14. If you are stressed, remember you are in control of your calendar. You are in charge  of your calendar, your calendar doesn’t control you. If work travel stresses you out, you dont have to do it! Talk with your boss and there may be ways to work around it like holding virtual meetings or sending someone else in your place. I had to have this conversation with my boss and client when I had a mandatory trip scheduled to New Orleans the week of my business school graduation. From day one, I said I couldnt go and they would need to find someone else. They did and my co-worker who was picked had a complete blast. It really improved her confidence and skills in her role too so it was a big win-win for everyone. Me saying no opened up a big opportunity for her to walk into for her own career. Remember, you are 100% in control of your life and your calendar. 15. Make a  morning  ritual. The biggest mistake that I see made over and over when traveling for work is waking up and checking email right away. I know I did this too when I was  at my day job. It really ruined my entire day especially when I worked with people on the east coast who had been sending work emails for hours. No one should have to wake up like that! Now my morning routine when traveling consists of journaling, meditating, listening to affirmations, reviewing my vision board and goals, reading, praying, and exercising. This has completely changed my life and my outlook on the day ahead. Wake up earlier. 16. Limit your priorities. I recommend only focusing on ONE THING  at a time to help with balancing your work and life. It’s time to make a list of everything you need to get done this week while you are traveling. Cut yourself some slack. You dont have to do everything. Then, I want you to prioritize this list in order of importance. 17.  Sleep As Much As You Can People who sleep less than 8 hours are more prone to making mistakes, headaches, and falling into other distractions. Also be careful of waking up in the middle of your REM cycle, this is your sleep cycle that usually takes 90 minutes to fully cycle through. If your alarm wakes you up in the middle of this, you can feel sluggish the rest of the day. Try getting to bed and waking up around the same time each day (even on the weekends!). Skills That Give Women A Sustainable Advantage Over Men

Skills That Give Women A Sustainable Advantage Over Men The following is a guest post by  Brenda Berg.  Her bio follows. In the workplace, it feels as though men have the advantage over women. Theyre seen as more knowledgeable, capable, and better than women at what they do. As a woman, you know thats not true, but its hard to get others in your workplace to see that. The fact is that women have some advantages that men just dont have. If youre interested in finding out more, read on. Are men and women really that different? As workers, men and women arent really that different at all even knowing that men and women have different brain circuity, according to the research made by National Academy of Science. Theyre both capable of coming into work, giving it their best effort, and getting the results they need. The major difference that most people see is the fact that women may need to take time off in order to have children, but not even all women in the workplace are going to do this, either. There are some differences, though, in how men and women go about their work. There are different skills at play that help women get the advantage in certain areas of their work. Why is it that women have different skills? The simple answer is because of culture, according to the study by Christoph Witzel. Theres fundamentally very little difference between men and women, apart from the obvious, but the two grow up in very different worlds. Women grow up in a world that teaches them that their worth lies in different directions to that of the workplace. To be successful, they need to be quieter, more flexible, and more willing to listen to others. To some, this may be seen as a disadvantage. But to others though, this could be a real boon. These traits give women tools that men just dont have, thanks to their own upbringing and culture. Just looking at the list of top 50 women in business, you can see that times have changed. Thats why, as a woman, you have a serious worth in the workplace. The skills that give women the advantage Women dont let ego get in the way: For men, their place in the industry is tied to their ego. This is because theyve been taught that you must get higher up, in order to be thought of as worthy. For women though, its different. They dont have to worry about status, and so they can see opportunity where others cannot. Women pay attention to the details: Its no secret that most women are detail oriented. While men are looking at the big picture, women are taking care of the smaller details to ensure that everything gets done. The number of women on leadership positions are increasing every year. This women’s skill is highly valuable in any workplace, as women can break down their work into smaller chunks. These chunks mean no detail is overlooked, so everything is done correctly the first time. This is especially true in writing. Amelia Foster, a writer from Academized, says that Women are more careful with what they write. In business, after all, most of your communication is through the written word. Theyre very careful to make sure their writing says exactly what they need it to. Women are much better at networking: It can be argued that men stick very closely together, and so miss out on growth opportunities. Women are different. Theyre happy to get out there and network.  They know that its the only way to find new people to work with. According to the Athena Vongalis-Macrow’s study, women’s networking is more effective. They also understand that if they want to find new opportunities, theyre going to have to help others out. By holding the door open for each other, both parties can get ahead. Women are more adventurous: Women are known to take more risks than men. Men may advertise their risks more, but women quietly make the jump and do things that are against the norm every single day. Theyre more willing to do something out of the box if theyre unhappy with what theyre currently doing. For example, they often go freelance as it offers them more opportunities. According to UK dissertation, it has seen an influx of female freelancers in recent years, as the job offers them more flexibility. There are 63% of women of their freelance jobs against 37% of men. Women create more meaningful relationships: Women are known to be better at working on their relationships, so theyre much better at bringing a team together. Thats a valuable skill you want to find in any leader. Theyll create deeper relationships too, so those working with them know they can be relied upon when needed. Women give more: Theres a reason why so many women run non-profit organisations, take part in a charity sector or donate more money. Theyre more willing to give more of themselves to make things work, according to the study provided by Women’s Philanthropy Institute. Where a man may go home at the end of the day with the work half done, a woman will make sure the job is completed before they leave. This can have an unexpected downside though, as you can end up giving too much of yourself. Women who can strike the right balance though should be prized in their workplace. Woman are about the job, not their image within it: When a woman comes to work, shes not worrying about how she looks if she takes on a certain task. Instead, shes focused on getting the job done. That means the job gets done well and ego never gets in the way. Women take more care with the technicalities of writing and speaking: Its more often women take care with the grammar and spelling in their work. No matter where theyre speaking and writing, be it a public speech, an email, a press release, a blog post, on social media, or even an agreement, their language is technically much more polished and sometimes even more emotional and creative. If their writing isnt as polished as theyd like it to be, women are more likely to go and get help to improve it. For example, Big Assignments says that their audience contains many more of women coming to them for advice rather than they see men. Women have plenty of skills that make them a real asset to any job they work at. You do have the edge over men when it comes to building teams and taking risks. Put them to the test in your workplace. About The Author Brenda Berg is a professional with over 15 years experience in business management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. How to Land a Job in the Cannabis Industry - CareerMetis.com

How to Land a Job in the Cannabis Industry Source: Pexels.comA recent study from New Frontier Data reports that the legal marijuana business is on the brink of adding a quarter of a million jobs by the year 2020, widely surpassing government and factory positions in a way no one saw coming. If you’ve been thinking about making a career change to the world of cannabis, the time is now.In 1996, California became the first U.S. state to legalize medical marijuana. In the 22 years that have passed, the plant is now medically legal in twenty-nine states as well as the District of Columbia, with recreational laws in place in eight of them.Despite its complicated legalities, consistent research from some of the nation’s highest experts has proved marijuana’s medicinal benefits and given way to an entirely untapped market that’s overflowing with innovative career opportunities.Kelly Embry, head of Network Growth at Eyechronic TV, gave FHM some insight on what it is like working in the business.“The coolest part of my job is watching the people in this industry work so hard to build an industry from the ground up.Providing an incredible product to cannabis retailers for free gives me a unique view of the businesses of hundreds of partners across the nation. Nothing beats being a part of this beautiful, green revolution that is re-educating the masses and unearthing the truth about the benefits of a simple plant demonized for far too long.”Over 85% of workers worldwide hate their jobs, according to a recent poll by Gallup. There’s little to no use in staying in a dead-end job when there are so many emerging opportunities. If you’ve been contemplating a career in legal marijuana, consider a few of these questions to help you get a head start in landing your dream job.Why Legal Marijuana?Making a change in your career is a significant power move that no one else can do for you. Consider why you’re feeling pulled towards working in the legal cannabis business and how that decision could help you achi eve your professional ambitions.Doing your research on the current market is an essential step before leaping into the unknown. No matter what you do, do it with intent, and you will surely find happiness in your career.“What makes this job cool is that in addition to the normal legal work of helping clients build and run their businesses, we are also simultaneously contributing to the establishment and growth of an entirely new industry in America: legalized cannabis,” says Mitchell Kulick, founder of Cannabis Practice at Feuerstein Kulick LLP. “As a result, the spirit of competition infuses the industry. That is truly special and rare in the normal dog-eat-dog world in which most lawyers operate.”Be Ready To Face CompetitionYou’re not the only one thinking about dipping a toe into the growing cash pool of legal marijuana. With more and more reports of job growth within the industry skyrocketing, the business is expanding, and the search for employment has only just begun .Marijuana Business Daily wrote in June that cannabis companies will soon “employ more people than there are dental hygienists and bakers in the United States and will soon surpass the number of telemarketers and pharmacists.”To be qualified for a position in legal marijuana, many employers consider passion over experience. If you don’t have any experience in the industry, focus on your applicable skills and strengths. That will help you stand out in a pile of hopeful resumes. Many of these jobs are, despite contrary belief, tricky to land due to their exclusivity. “They tend to be high-end, well-paid retail jobs,” says Tom Adams, editor-in-chief of cannabis investors ArcView, to CBS News. “The cannabis industry is the classic mom-and-pop scenario. It’s very labor intensive, and those mom-and-pop operators tend to pay very well to get people who are knowledgeable about cannabis and very good at interacting with a range of consumers.”What if You Have No Experience?Donâ €™t be overwhelmed at the thought of exploring a new field in which you have little experience. Luckily, as it is a relatively young industry. As a result, many entry-level positions offer accessible ways to climb up the ladder. Most enterprises encourage and are fueled by inner-company growth. “It’s so new, it’s like you’re working in dog years,” says Kyle Arfsten, Vangst’s head of business development. “If you have one year of experience, that counts for a lot.”Adapt your resume to follow a more functional format, focusing less on employment history and more on personal skills and strengths. Potential employers look for this drive to prove oneself in unknown territory. Taking that chance will allow you to stand out in the eyes of cannabis companies.Even the most basic introduction to the legal marijuana business could land you a six-figure job.Edible chefs can earn an annual paycheck of anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000, with dispensary owners capable of surpassing that.A cannabis sales representative earns an average wage of $12 to $15 an hour. There is also the added possibility of a commission, like other retail positions. These positions are exceedingly desired and sought after, so don’t expect to receive a high offer right away. However, as is true of many entry-level jobs, you can give it your all and climb the ladder of success in no time. How Do You Prepare for an Interview with the CEO?Congratulations, you’ve landed an interview with a potential employer in the cannabis business.Demonstrate your knowledge of the company’s core goals and values while keeping perspective of the current legal marijuana market.Show them that you’ve got what it takes to succeed and you’re ready to bring it to the table.According to the Cannabis Training Institute, “The most important traits for cannabis industry workers to have are professionalism, passion, and dedication. We’re in the process of breaking stigmas, so be extremely mindful of you r demeanor and personal appearance.”This means keeping the tie-dye at home. Opt instead for a professional look reflective of the corporate environment.Landing a job in the cannabis industry can be trickier than it looks. However, if you play your cards right, you’ll find yourself in a career that’s always evolving. “There is not another multi-billion-dollar market growing at this rate anywhere in the world. Opportunities like this are rare. To be a part of something that has been stigmatized for so long, while also helping to remove the negative connotations around cannabis is special,” says Matt Singer, CEO of tökr. “Cannabis is helping so many people, for a range of reasons. It’s rewarding to help people discover safe products that can dramatically improve their lives.”

Five Social Media Tips for Anthony Weiner

Five Social Media Tips for Anthony Weiner Representative Anthony Weiner has fessed up and admitted that he was the one sending lewd photos of himself on Twitter and that his account was never hacked. I write a lot about managing your online presence and digital dirt during a job search but the same rules apply for people who are trying to hold on to the jobs they have. Here are 5 tips for Weiner and anyone else out there dabbling in social media or even just corresponding via email. On Twitter, when you only want a message to go to one person (a DM or direct message) double check your messaging options (best to do this with both hands on the keyboard).Dont assume a private DM on Twitter is really that private. After all, it is the Internet.Dont put anything online that could be sliced and diced, misinterpreted or taken out of context.Dont put anything online that you wouldnt want your grandmother (or your wife!) to see.Dont jeopardize a career that took years to build with one stupid picture or 140 character message.Feel free to post additional tips for Weiner here.

What You Need to Know About AACE Resume Writing

What You Need to Know About AACE Resume WritingAACE resume writing is a very complicated part of the job hunt process for most professionals. More people are spending their free time working on their resumes. Because of this, it is imperative that you spend the required amount of time to write your resume with efficiency and class. To write your AACE resume properly, first decide what your expectations of the document should be. How much information should it contain? Do you want it to include your education and work experience? What should it be about? The first thing you need to do in order to prepare a professional AACE resume is to determine how much information you can comfortably fit into a certain space. If your prospective employer is a small business, you can simply list your name, address, title, and employer. If your potential employer is a large corporation, you may have to work harder to cover all aspects of your employment. The more you know about your target company, the better prepared you will be.In order to write a successful AACE resume, you should consider at least three sections. First, consider what specific information you would like to include on your cover letter. You should also consider where you would like to place the purpose statement, which will serve as your summary of what your main objective is.Next, you should choose a unique and meaningful title for your resume. Your title should capture the essence of your job search and make your potential employer aware of what your objectives are. Also, you should refrain from including your full name, since it will only confuse your potential employer when you try to look up your records.Last, and perhaps most importantly, you should spend as much time as possible on your AACE resume.
